| A Short Biography on Phil Winninghoff Raised on a ranch five miles south of Philipsburg, Phil was inspired by the view of the Pintler Mountains further south and knew he wanted to someday be able to capture their beauty in paint. He began oil painting while in high school. His first attempt was the family cabin at Kaiser Lake near the Middle Fork of Rock Creek. That painting hung for a while at his grandfather and uncle's barbershop on Harrison Avenue in Butte, Montana. He would have preferred to study art when attending Montana State University in Bozeman but, as a compromise to his family, he studied architecture instead. While there he picked up a few ideas from the art department by taking as many electives from them as he could fit in. Later in life, while working as a layout artist for the Montana Power Company, he spent many vacations attending artist workshops in various places around the United States. Perhaps it is through his infatuation with the view of the Pintler Mountains in his early years while on the ranch that has directed his art to painting landscapes. He feels that there is a progression in style and technique that comes through practice. He directs it efforts towards depicting the landscape within the framework of his vision and this directs him toward a realism that is, perhaps, unique to himself. |
